WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 3 -5

We Have Been Busy!
As you can see from the pictures, the Hans
family welcomed a new baby-cone
customer into the family. Sarah Kathleen
Hans was born to son and daughter-in-law,
Edward and Jessica Hans on August 9th.
We are lucky that the Marine dad is
stationed in Pittsburgh, just a few turnpike
exits away. Baby Sarah is lovely and adored
by her big sister Mia. We are so blessed!
Grandma Molly missed a few days at the
market to go count fingers and toes. Mia
was a big help in the kitchen, cooking for
Mommy and Daddy. But school is now in
session for Aunt Cara, so we are back on a
schedule. Sort of!

Good Eating!
We have been making some terrific pesto
with fresh basil and delicious spaghetti
sauce with fresh tomatoes - all from the
Broad Street Farmer's Market. And if you
haven't tried flank steak from Lebanon
Valley Meats or ham steaks from
Hummer's, you're missing out! It's so easy
to plan dinner when you work at a farmer's
market.

Still Cranking Out the Sorbetto!
Ed bought a new machine to make
sorbetto, so we can make small batches,
keep it fresh and try new flavors every
market day. The lemon is as tart as we can
make it, and who knew that pineapple
sorbetto would be so popular? Try a scoop
of sorbetto with a scoop of vanilla frozen
custard. It's amazing.

WEEK OF JULY 23 - 25

You Say Sorbet, We Say Sorbetto
"What's the difference between sorbet and
sorbetto?" We hear that question several
times a day as Broad Street Marketers
taste our smooth new dessert. The
answer: geography. Sorbet and sorbetto
are the same concoction, but we buy our
supplies from an Italian company, thus:
SORBETTO cool and smooth, with lots of
fruit and no egg, milk or other dairy
products. We decide on the flavors a day or
two before we make it - based on the
availability of really good fresh fruit. Try
some with a scoop of vanilla custard. YUM!
As my friend Jayne would say, "It's to die
for."

New Flavors a Summer Sell-out
At the suggestion of some of our
customers, we came up with a recipe for
Peanut Butter flavored frozen custard and it
was delicious. So delicious, in fact, that we
quickly sold out. Ann and Ned graciously
agreed to taste-test two different versions
of the recipe. It must have been OK
because they finished both pints!

Time to Try On Some Muddy Boots!
Another new flavor was an instant sell-out.
Muddy Boots is our Chocolate Frozen
Custard, studded with chunks of Reese's
Peanut Butter cups. DELISH! We didn't
have any left over for Kelly, who originally
named the flavor, but we will make it again
on August 15.

WEEK OF JULY 1-3

It's Officially Summer!
The Grover boys are on the swim team.
Tucker is off on an adventure with her
granddaughter. Charlene's granddaughter
is visiting for a week. Kelly hosted a huge
Fourth of July picnic for her friends and
family ("What was I thinking!" she said
when she came in to pick up a few pints of
sorbetto. And I am getting lots of cooking
and grilling ideas from our customers.

Straight from the Gardens
The Broad Street Market is definitely THE
place to shop for fruits and vegetables at
this time of year. We have had delicious
zucchini, green beans, rhubarb, green
peppers and spinach from our vendors - all
at a fraction of the price at the grocery
stores. This is a time of year when you
think, "Maybe I could be a vegetarian!" But
then you pick up some ground beef,
chicken breasts or ham steak for the grill
from our butchers and you're hooked all
over again.

Congrats Kelly and Ernest!
Kelly finally delivered a beautiful son -
Lucien Apple. He hasn't had his first
chocolate shake yet but we were so glad
mom and dad brought him in so we could
count his fingers and toes.

WEEK OF JUNE 25 - 27
New Hours for the Week of the 4th
The market will be open full days
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next
week. Happy 4th of July everyone! We will
be at a softball tournament.

Dave Chapelle at the Market??
No, it's a new friend whose name is Lester
and he is crazy about our black raspberry
milkshakes. Lester, if you're out there, we
now have a large milkshake. Thanks for the
suggestion! Check out Lester's website
www.pagospel.com.

Willie and the Sluggers
Mr. Fordham and some of his friends who
packed a wallop for the Negro Leagues
back in the day will be on CSPAN, live from
the Broad Street Market courtyard on
Saturday July 11. Come and meet these
living legends.

No Word from Ernest
We haven't heard whether or not Kelly had
her baby, but we didn't see them at the
Market on Saturday, so who knows?? Will
they stop in for milkshakes after Kelly stops
having her cravings for Hans Frozen
Custard? We hope so. Ernest is one of our
biggest fans!

WEEK OF JUNE 18-20
Thanks to all who made a donation to
Bethesda Mission
The Great Frozen Custard Giveaway was a
great success. We almost started on time -
at 9:30 - and gave away all the vanilla
custard by 1:00, just in time to get to a 2:00
wedding at St. Pat's Cathedral. From
pennies to a check for $50, we raised more
than $300 and had a lot of fun.

Funny Lady
A lot of our customers can be mighty
humorous, but one of them is a
professional. We had a chance to see
Karen Gray in her one-woman show, "Oh,
Crap. I Forgot to Have Kids" at the Open
Stage at the Whittaker Center. Very funny!
And so true!! One of the best lines, "You
can't measure a happy childhood by how
often you laughed but how, when you cried,
someone was there for you."

Another Molly
So far, we have met two (other) Mollies who
are fans of Hans Frozen Custard. One lives
in Midtown and is a great resource for
movie reviews. The other is a St. Louis
transplant who is very familiar with Ted
Drewes - the most famous frozen custard
shop in America - and with concretes,
which Pennsylvanians can only find at
Hans Frozen Custard.

WEEK OF JUNE 4-6
A VISIT FROM BEN FRANKLIN 4TH
GRADERS
On a dreary Friday, we had a wonderful visit
from Ms. Goldsmith's and Ms. Crist's fourth
graders. They all had cones of frozen
custard - cookies and creme was the
favorite flavor by far. We have never seen
such a large group of good-looking and
well-behaved youngsters! According to their
teachers they have had a great year,
learning cooperation and good manners -
and math! We hope we will see them in the
summer.

Congrats Grads!
On Saturday, we saw several young people
in caps and gowns and we know that lots
of kids are finishing one phase of their
education and beginning another -
including Nate, who is graduating from St.
Patrick's Cathedral School and headed to
the Sci-Tech Academy.

Further Adventures of the Red-Headed
Twins
Our friend Brian had the boys in on Friday -
a day earlier than we usually see them!
Mom was home recovering from a nasty
bug. The others are hoping they don't come
down with it before they leave for the shore!

We Miss You Bill!
Our friend Bill, the maintenance superman
is on a trip with his family to California - the
first time he has ever been on a plane. We
do miss his smiling face and his practical
jokes, but we know he is having a good
time with his family. And he has more than
earned the time off, with all the work he
puts into keeping things running smoothly
at the Market.

WEEK OF MAY 7-9

THE HOT SAUCE GUY
Yes, all of the vendors at the market have
names, but mostly we call them the Hot
Sauce Guy, the Obama Lady, the Amish
pretzel people. Well, Mike the hot sauce guy
stopped by to talk about his trip in a 30 ft.
sailboat to Australia. Make sure you try the
hot sauce. Some of them are really really
hot!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
Keith and Brendan came in with news of
Keith's successful marathon in Pittsburgh
last week. They picked up a whole bunch of
custard to take home to Mom. Nate and
Ben bought a couple of pints. Dylan picked
up some custard for his mother and his
grandmother. Lucky mom!

OUR BUSIEST WEEK EVER!
Whoohoo!! The thunderstorms passed us
by all week and the temperatures warmed
up enough for people to venture out in
search of frozen custard.

We made coconut custard - with fresh,
toasted coconut flakes - on Thursday and
sold every scoop so we made it again on
Saturday! Absolutely delicious. Especially
with a scoop of pineapple sorbetto on top.

WEEK OF APRIL 16 - 19

SORBETTO IS A BIG HIT!
Sorbetto is the newest member of the
frozen dessert family at Hans Frozen
Custard. Made with a Sorbetto base from
the Berzaci company of Italy, we add lots of
fresh fruit and make it in our frozen custard
machines. Sorbetto has an unbelievably
smooth and creamy taste - with no dairy!
No milk or cream. Just a refreshing fruit
taste. We are currently testing a variety of
flavors to see which ones are the most
popular. Saturday we had orange -
fantastico with a scoop of vanilla custard!
This Saturday we are featuring Wild Berry. It
might be Molly's favorite so far. Stop in and
ask for a free sample.

The Red-Heads Bring Their Mother to the
Market
Due to a cable blow-up at the Gilmore
house - and the untimely death of a
neighborhood squirrel - the twins didn't
make it in until later in the day. But they
brought their beautiful mother Jeanette with
them. It was nice have the whole family
together!

Aunts and Nieces and Nephews, Oh My!
It was a busy day and we were so glad to
see the smiling faces of Eddie Hans,
Audrey Hans and Olivia Hans, with Aunt
Cindy in tow. Mom and Dad were at a
home-schooling conference and Aunt
Cindy figured the Broad Street Market was
a great place to have some fun, visit Aunt
Molly and Uncle Woody and get some
yummy Hans Frozen Custard.
Grandmother also stopped in for a pint of
Girl Scout Thin Mint.

WEEK OF APRIL 9-11
Cara at the Helm
Our daughter Cara filled in for Molly on
Thursday and did a great job. Molly plans to
leave town this summer for a wedding and
a birthday or two, so we are glad to see
how capable and helpful Cara is as a Hans
Frozen Custard employee. Everything was
spic and span when Molly came into work
the next day. Whoohoo!

Jamocha Shakes
Yes, we made chocolate custard on the
Saturday before Easter to help the Easter
Bunny with chocolate delivery. Brian and
one other customer ordered a coffee shake
- with the chocolate custard. We may have
to make it a regular feature on the menu.

The Hans's  (not..) on the Run
Our friend Trish McFadden stopped by to
say hello on Thursday. Trish has actually
had a different last name (her husband's !)
for quite some time, but we have known her
since we were all in kindergarten together,
so McFadden it is. Trish has been running
faithfully in all kinds of weather. We had not
laced up our sneakers since the Vinnie's
Kids 5k race - two weeks ago! So, yes, we
were shamed into getting up early on
Easter Sunday and hitting the road.

Sorbetto Is Your Friend!
If you're lactose intolerant, you will love our
sorbetto. Even if you're not lactose
intolerant, you'll love it! Creamy and fruity
and refreshing all at the same - it's a real
treat. Just ask Crystal, our official
taste-taster!

Search and Rescue Called Off!
If we don't see our friend Richard for a few
days, we start to worry! He does
construction projects in the area - and the
electrical and the plumbing and painting.
Like Jim Thorpe, Richard is the whole
team. Some people say he looks like
Smokey Robinson. We say Mr. Robinson
should be so lucky!

Thanks for the Recipes!
So far, our friend Taz has given us recipes
for hot sauce, Amish cinnamon bread and
an amazing lime wasabi dipping sauce. It's
about time Molly reciprocated. Maybe he'd
like her secret recipe for peanut butter and
jelly sandwich. Actually, a lot of our recipes
these days come from Bakespace. It's a lot
of fun. Check it out!
Bakespace

WEEK OF MARCH 26-28

Will We Ever See Them Again?
We hope so! The sweet deal with our
"Fresh" shirts expired at the end of this
week. Anyone wearing a Hans Frozen
Custard "Fresh" shirt was entitled to a free
single dish or cone. They got some
delicious custard and we got some great
friends in the bargain. Liz and Claudia gave
us a report on the New Kids on the Block
concert they attended together. Cheryl and
Jenn broke with tradition and had enjoyed
their last few servings in cones, instead of
dishes in honor of the warmer weather.
Brenna, Heather and Dave all stopped in
for one last free serving. Ben enjoyed his
usual concoction of a wild combination of
flavors. So many smiling faces - and lovely
tee-shirts. :)

Wrestling Report
Brian stopped in without the dynamic trio
this past Saturday and he and Ed got
caught up on the world of high school and
college wrestling. Lots of interesting news
on that front and it brought back lots of
memories for Ed from his days as a
"wrestling dad" in Charlotte, NC.

First Signs of Spring?
A robin, a few kids in shorts - and lots and
lots of milkshakes! We started adding our
outstanding custard flavorings to our vanilla
custard with some whole milk and the
milkshakes are phenomenal. Look for
Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Black
Raspberry, Red Raspberry, Eggnog,
Coffee, Mint Chocolate Chip and banana
(when we can find ripe ones). Ed has even
been known to whip up a cookies & creme
or two. Yum!

WEEK OF MARCH 5-9

We Call It Sorbetto !
Our newest brain-freeze child is not just a
new flavor but a new product: SORBETTO!
It's all fruit, with a creamy texture and a
smooth "mouth feel," as they say in the
industry. On Saturday, we made Triple
Berry. Crystal - our trusty taste tester - took
home a pint of sorbetto to take it for a spin
in her freezer. We know it will taste just as
delicious on Monday as it did on Saturday!

Want to Try a Custard Pie??
If you look in our chest freezer, you'll see a
few new additions to the Hans Frozen
Custard take-away menu. With a delicious
Oreo crust, a healthy helping of Hans
Frozen Custard and a swirl of topping - with
whipped cream - these pies are absolutely
delicious. Stop in or give us a call and we
will tell you how to order a pie with your
favorite flavor. The perfect addition to your
next family celebration.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 19 - 21
The last cold Saturday of the season - we
hope!!

Valentine's Day (last week) was one of the
best of the year. Since it was on a Saturday,
we saw lots of guys wandering through the
market clutching flowers and candy. There
was even some Hans Frozen Custard
destined for romantic dinners.

True to her word, ROSA stopped by to pick
up some Cherry Bon Bon custard. We
haven't had it in quite a while and Ed was
really pleased with how it turned out. Cherry
custard. Bordeaux cherry halves. Dark
chocolate chips. No wonder we sold out of
it!

We loved hearing about your Valentine's
plans. BRIAN and his wife were getting
take-out from her favorite restaurant,
Gabriella's. One young couple planned to
cook a steak, rent some movies, open
some custard, lock the door and take the
phone off the hook!

MARKET CELEBRITIES
Look for pictures of NATHAN and ELIJAH in
the next issue of In Central Pennsylvania
Magazine in an article on friendship. What a
handsome pair!

FRESH REPORT
BENJAMIN continues to make the most of
his investment in a Hans Frozen Custard
"fresh" shirt, stopping in almost every
market day for a free dish. DAVE wore his
shirt on Saturday, but turned the custard
over to his son MAX, who looked like he
was having a good time with his dad at the
market. TAZ hasn't been wearing his shirt,
but he comes in for a pint of custard
anyway and last week he brought a bottle of
his original hot sauce - with the recipe! We
can't wait to try it!

HEARD IT ON THE RADIO
Tune in to 93.5 FM and you'll start hearing
ads for the Broad Street Market. We hope
they will bring in lots and LOTS of new
customers. Many thanks to RAFIKA for
pushing the effort until it finally got done.

WEEK OF JANUARY 1 - 3

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It was a hectic schedule at the Hans House
- and at the Market - over the holidays.
Because we were open on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays, and there was no school, we
never really knew what day it was! But our
customers figured it out and we sold lots of
pints to people planning Christmas and
New Year's get-togethers. Best of all, we
made some new friends who had tasted
our custard at those gatherings and came
to the market to see where they could get
some more! The Eggnog got especially
outstanding reviews. Over the past week,
we spent a lot of time planning a monthly
flavors calendar and we will have copies
next time you come in. Ed is also working
on a suggestion box so that we can get an
idea of any flavors - new or old - that you
have been looking for. See you at the
Market!

WEEK OF DECEMBER 11-13

CONGRATS NATHANIEL!
Our young friend Nate is proud to report
that he shot a deer on his first day out with
his grandfather - and he showed us the
shotgun shell to prove it! Nate's favorite
form of venison is venison jerky and we
hope he'll bring some in for us to taste.

A FAMILIAR FACE
Our friend Kahlil was in last week and we
were so glad to see him! "Remember me?"
he asked with his trademark grin. How
could we forget? The smile is the same
even though Kahlil is MUCH taller since the
last time we saw him.

IT'S ALL RELATIVE
Molly's brother Terry and her brother Tim
were in on Friday and Saturday. They are
are two of our best taste testers. We haven't
seen nearly as many Hans's as Keatings
this season? What's the deal?

WEEK OF DECEMBER 4-6

A SNOWY DAY!
It's never too cold for frozen custard! That's
what we heard from so many of you on
Saturday as you came in from the cold. We
sold cups, cones, sundaes, shakes, pints
and quarts as the snowflakes swirled and
the wind crept in under the threshold. We
hope to see you all in all kinds of weather.

A KID DAY!
Some of our favorite young people are
starting to be repeat customers. One of the
redheaded twins came in with his dad and
his baby brother (named GooGoo, as far as
we can tell!). Benjamin brought his mother
in to meet us and taste some custard. And
Brenna in on Saturday to buy a FRESH
shirt. It's so much fun to meet these really
nice kids.

WELCOME TAMMI
We have a new neighbor at the market. No
Common Scents features hand-made
specialty soaps - unique, inexpensive nifty
gifties for the nifty people on your
Christmas list. Stop by and say hello!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 13 - 15

A NEW FLAVOR!
On Saturday we debuted a new flavor and it
is getting rave reviews: Eggnog! There is
plenty in the freezer so stop in and get a
pint, or try it fresh on Saturday.

Turkey Day Just Around the Corner
The market is busier than ever with folks
ordering turkeys and stocking up on greens
and other family favorites. It's fun to hear
what people are doing for the holidays.
Audrey is on her way to Houston. Tom is
headed for a cabin in the mountains to
cook with friends. Lonnie will be with his
niece and her new baby. Molly and Ed will
be in Elizabethtown with dear friends of the
family. Our son David and his BEAUTIFUL
new bride Linda will be in town from
Minneapolis.

Local Restaurant Serving Hans Frozen
Custard
Table 15 on Second and Harris St.
(formerly Cafe Bayou) is now featuring
Hans Frozen Custard on their dessert
menu. Thanks to Andrew and Amber White,
an awesome husband and wife chef team.
And thanks to Anthony who "discovered"
Hans Frozen Custard and shared it with his
co-workers.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 23-25

LOTS OF FRESH CUSTOMERS AT HANS
FROZEN CUSTARD

HELLO GRACE AND PAT
Ed and Cara held down the fort without me
on Saturday and I missed two of my favorite
people. Pat, who used to be the school
nurse at Ben Franklin School and Grace,
who used to sample everything on the
menu and then buy raspberry! I hope they
will be back next week. This week we also
saw Amber and Andrew White, the chefs
from Table 15 (formerly Cafe Bayou) on
Second and Harris Street in Harrisburg.
They do their shopping at the Market for the
freshest produce for their customers - and
a little treat for themselves at Hans Frozen
Custard.

GOODBYE DARYL AND CHRISTIAN!
One of our first customers - and one of our
favorite families! The first time they ever
stopped in, they decided what kind of
custard to buy based on what color their
daughter was wearing that day (pink). Later
in the year, they bought a pint of pumpkin
custard to send to a friend in New York. We
will miss them but wish them well as Chris
takes a new job in Chicago.

Week of October 16-18

GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU!
We got an email from Brian last week -
right from the Website, whoohoo! - who
comes in every Saturday with his three
boys. The  baby, christened Goo-goo by his
older redheaded twin brothers, seems very
content to be pushed around the market in
the stroller. They all stop to see Jim the
Baker first for a cookie and then to Hans
Frozen Custard for a special treat to take
home for mom.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE fresh LADIES?
There's a whole group of them who now
own Hans Frozen Custard tee-shirts - and
the right to stop in every day for a free cone.
They are our best  advertisers! Margaret
Kocevar at the flower stand insists that they
are violating a Broad Street Market rule. No
one is allowed to eat Hans Frozen Custard
in front of her stand unless they bring some
for her! Here's a hint: she likes caramel
pecan and cherry vanilla.

THE BEST OF THE FRESH
For only five dollars, these Hans Frozen
Custard fans are now the proud owners of
a fresh tee-shirt. We love to sell these
shirts. Since they come with a guarantee of
a free single dish or cone when you wear
the shirt, we can be sure we will see these
folks every week! Look for these folks
wearing a fresh shirt:
Donald, Darlene, Lindsey, Jill, Wendy, Liz,
Lisa, Jenn, Cheryl, Patrice, Dan, Claudia,
Thomas, Liz, Christian and Shawn.

CUSTARD WITH A SIDE OF POLITICS
Yes, it was one of our best customers who
got into a debate with Ed over the election.
You can be sure that they will cancel each
other's vote in November, but you can also
bet that no amount of controversy will come
between a custard fan and his double
vanilla in a dish.

YOU'VE NEVER TASTED
A MALT LIKE THIS
We now have malt for our shakes. With our
fresh vanilla custard, deep dark chocolate
syrup and a healthy helping of malt, you will
never taste a better shake.

Week of October 4 - 6

WELCOME KELLY !
Kelly from the massive produce stand in
the back of the market stopped by all three
days last week. She and her co-workers
have a long commute from the farm to the
market - especially when someone has to
go home and take care of the cats. It's so
nice to see Kelly's big smile, even before
she gets her custard.

ED TALKS POLITICS
So what else is new?! Micheal stopped in
for a quart of his favorite cherry vanilla
custard and stayed for a discussion of the
economic bailout package passed by
Congress. It was a lively exchange even
though he and Ed agree!

CELEBRITY SIGHTING
Harrisburg's hilarious Karen Gray made
her first visit to Hans Frozen Custard and
was immediately recognized by a fan. She
was gracious and charming and gave us
an update on her new show.

SO GOOD TO BE BACK AT THE MARKET
It is so gratifying to see familiar faces and
make new friends. We hope to bring you all
your favorite flavors and add some new
ones as well. Tom, we now have malt for
your shake! It is so delicious.

FREE CUSTARD
What's the catch??? Buy a Hans Frozen
Custard tee-shirt and receive free custard
with the original purchase - AND every time
you wear the to thr market. Such a deal! We
hope to present a tee-shirt fashion show
online soon.

See you next week!
AROUND THE
MARKET
WELCOME TO THE WORLD,
SARAH KATHLEEN!
